\u00c4gypten liegt im Nordosten Afrikas. Das Land erstreckt sich \u00fcber eine L\u00e4nge von 1.030 km und eine Breite von 960 km. Es bedeckt auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent eine Gesamtfl\u00e4che von ca. 1 Mio. qkm, rund das Dreifache der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.<\/p>\n
Insgesamt pr\u00e4gen f\u00fcnf Hauptlandschaften das Gesicht \u00c4gyptens: die Halbinsel Sinai, die Arabische W\u00fcste \u00f6stlich, die Libysche W\u00fcste westlich des Nils, das vom Nil in das W\u00fcstenplateau eingeschnittene Niltal und das ca. 24.000 qkm gro\u00dfe Nildelta n\u00f6rdlich von Kairo.<\/p>\n
96% der Fl\u00e4che sind W\u00fcste \u2013 die so genannte \u00d6stliche und Westliche W\u00fcste \u2013, und nur 4% sind urbares, kultivierbares Land, das sich entlang der Lebensader \u00c4gyptens, dem insgesamt 6.671 km langen Nil, erstreckt. Der Westen grenzt an Libyen und der S\u00fcden an den Sudan. Die \u00d6stliche und die Nubische W\u00fcste bilden zusammen eine geologische Einheit.<\/p>\n
Die Libysche W\u00fcste, auch Westliche W\u00fcste oder Gro\u00dfes Sandmeer genannt, nimmt ca. 2\/3 der Staatsfl\u00e4che ein und ist eine aus Kalkstein bestehende Hochebene, in der sich mehrere Senken sowie zahlreiche Oasen befinden.<\/p>\n
Die K\u00fcste, die sich von Suez nach Berenice erstreckt, s\u00e4umt eine Sand- und Schotterebene.<\/p>\n
Die 220.000 qkm gro\u00dfe \u00d6stliche W\u00fcste wird im Osten durch das Rote Meer und den Golf von Suez begrenzt. N\u00f6rdlich von Hurghada beginnt das Rotmeergebirge, hinter dem die Landschaft in Sand- und Ger\u00f6llw\u00fcste \u00fcbergeht, bis sie die Gr\u00fcnausl\u00e4ufer des Nildeltas erreicht. H\u00f6chster Berg des Landes ist der Gebel Shayab mit 2.185 m.<\/p>\n
Bodensch\u00e4tze kommen besonders im s\u00fcdlichen Teil der \u00d6stlichen W\u00fcste vor.<\/p>\n
Abbauf\u00e4hig sind Phosphat, Mangan- und Eisenerz, Kaolin, Blei, Zink, Titan, Wolfram und Asbest. Hervorzuheben ist auch der Goldreichtum dieser Region. Besonders in der Antike wurde hier das Edelmetall gesch\u00fcrft. Noch heute wird im Hinterland von Safaga, Quseir und Marsa Alam Phosphor abgebaut. Erfolgreich war auch die Suche nach Erd\u00f6l, das zu den wichtigsten Exportg\u00fctern des Landes geh\u00f6rt.
