Fischadler, Wasserschildkr\u00f6ten und Seek\u00fche sind in der Region heimisch und neben zahlreichen endemischen Pflanzen in der unber\u00fchrten Natur zu bewundern. Verschiedene Nationalparks und Naturschutzgebiete wurden hier eingerichtet, darunter der Wadi El Gemal, s\u00fcdlich von Marsa Alam, das Dolphin House oder die Qulaan Inseln. Die u-f\u00f6rmige, kleine Bucht von Abu Dabab (Marsa Murena) ist bekannt f\u00fcr Meeresschildkr\u00f6ten und Dugongs. Die Unterwasserwelt der Region z\u00e4hlt zu den besten Tauchrevieren der ganzen Welt.<\/p>\n
Urspr\u00fcnglich war Marsa Alam ein K\u00fcstenst\u00e4dtchen. Erst mit der Er\u00f6ffnung des knapp 60 km entfernten Flughafens im November 2001 begann die touristische Entwicklung der Stadt am Roten Meer. „Die Bucht der Fahnen“, wie Marsa Alam \u00fcbersetzt hei\u00dft, liegt circa 800 km s\u00fcdlich von Kairo. Bis nach El Quseir sind es 132 km.
