Arabic is the official language of Egypt. The Arabic script runs from right to left, but note: numbers are written from left to right! Books, newspapers, and magazines are read from back to front. Of all the world's languages, it is considered the most difficult to learn and for Europeans to speak. It is comparable to shorthand, as vowels are not written but indicated by symbols, which are themselves rarely written. Unlike the German alphabet, the Arabic alphabet has 28 letters. Each letter has four different symbols, depending on its position within the word.
