About 40 km north of Aswan, on the east bank of the Nile, lies the industrial city of Kom Ombo. The city is best known for Egypt's largest camel market, located 8 km to the south, and for the ancient Egyptian double temple, picturesquely situated on a bend in the Nile. The ruins of the Kom Ombo temple are built on the crest of a hill. When the temple lost its religious function, it was gradually covered by shifting sands. When the Copts used the temple, they destroyed some of the reliefs. Later, the temple served as a quarry. A Nile flood destroyed the temple roof.
