The Upper Egyptian city of Edfu is located on the west bank of the Nile and belongs to Egypt's southernmost province of Aswan. The surrounding area is characterized by agriculture; the city's inhabitants primarily make their living from the traditional pottery trade. Besides agriculture and sugar factories, the Temple of Horus, built during the Ptolemaic period between 237 and 57 BC, is a prominent feature of the area around Edfu. The temple is the best-preserved religious building in the country.
