Description
Discover the "capital of explorers" in one day
Let yourself be surprised by the omnipresent history and culture, but also by the modern age and the joie de vivre that makes this city so attractive.
After driving through Alentejo, the country's largest province with its cork oak forests, olive groves, and rice fields, you'll reach the cosmopolitan city of Lisbon. Founded on seven hills, it's considered Europe's second Rome. Even as you approach the city, you'll be treated to a beautiful view of the Christ the Redeemer statue, one of Lisbon's most important landmarks.
Upon arrival in the city, you will receive a detailed explanation of three of the city's landmarks: the Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries, unveiled in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator, and the Jerónimo Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built by King Manuel I to commemorate Vasco da Gama's successful discovery of India. Admire the monastery's fascinating architecture, with its intricate mosaics, tombs, and stained-glass windows (optional), or take a leisurely stroll to the Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries.
In Lisbon's inscrutable, romantic maze of streets, discover the flair of bygone days. A guided walking tour takes you along Rossio Square and Rua Augusta to the city's most famous square, Praça do Comércio. The tour culminates with a tasting of "Ginjinha," Lisbon's signature drink.
During your free time, take the famous Santa Justa Elevator to the upper town and be enchanted by the breathtaking view of the city. Enjoy lunch (optional) in one of the countless typical restaurants in Portugal's capital or visit one of Lisbon's oldest and most authentic neighborhoods: Alfama – the birthplace of Fado. The village-like atmosphere of its countless alleys and small squares makes Alfama an absolute must-see for any visitor to Lisbon.
