Sozopol, the "City of Salvation", is one of the oldest cities on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Already in the seventh century B.C. Greeks settled here on a tongue of rock that extends far into the sea. Remains of these buildings can be seen in the Archaeological Museum.
Also worth seeing is the Church of Sveta Bogorodica with an impressive iconostasis decorated with many valuable icons.
The old town, framed by fortress walls, lies picturesquely on the cape and has attracted artists for centuries, who capture the typical Black Sea houses with stone ground floor and wooden living room floor, the cobblestone streets and the cypress trees on canvas. There is a lot of hustle and bustle in the new town. Cafes, restaurants and shops invite you to linger and stroll.
