The magical peninsula
Halkidiki is a peninsula in northern Greece that extends into the northern Aegean with its three foothills. Because of its peculiar shape, it is also called the Three Finger Peninsula or "Poseidon's Trident".
Kassandra is the westernmost and most touristically developed finger. Here you will find numerous long sandy and pebble beaches and a well-developed infrastructure. The middle finger, Sithonia, is called the most beautiful of the three fingers because of its beautiful sandy beaches, bays and variety of plants. Three quarters of the third and easternmost foothills of Mount Athos belong to the monastic republic of the same name, only the northern part belongs to Greece. Both countries are separated from each other by a wall. The Holy Mount Athos has steep rocky coasts, on whose slopes the monasteries cling like swallow's nests.
Halkidiki is one of the greenest and most densely wooded landscapes in Greece. Therefore it is affectionately called "the green garden of Greece".
It has been proven that the region was already inhabited in early times, because the 200.000-year-old skull of Archantropus was found in the stalactite cave of Petralona. Furthermore, the finds in Vavdos near Nea Triglia prove that Halkidiki already had a rich flora and fauna at that time.
