Description
One of the oldest stalactite caves in Europe
This half-day excursion takes you to Nea Moudania. The small port town was founded in the 1920s by Greek refugees from Turkey and is therefore nicknamed "Nea", which means "new".
The region's largest weekly market invites you to shop and stroll here. Early in the morning, stalls, tables and canopies are set up on site and stocked with seasonal products from the region. Fruit and vegetables, eggs, flowers and plants, various types of olives, souvenirs and clothing fill the colorful stalls and tables. Enjoy the hustle and bustle of market day.
Afterwards, the journey takes you to the cave labyrinth of Petralona (entrance fee not included, payable on site) – one of the most beautiful stalactite caves in Greece – west of Poligiros.
In the cave you can admire stalagmites, stalactites and columns of every imaginable shape. However, its uniqueness lies in the significant discovery of a human skull, which, at 250.000 years old, is considered the oldest known skull in Europe. Stone tools made mainly of quartz and bauxite were also found near the old cave entrance. These tools were made and used by Paleolithic people mainly for processing their food.
The small tour leads past traces of primitive human dwellings, the remains of prehistoric animals and a 700.000 year old fireplace, framed by bizarre stalactite formations.
