Description
The diverse nature of the south
After being picked up from your hotel on Djerba, you will travel over the 7 km long Roman dam “El Kantara” to the Tunisian mainland (participating guests from Zarzis will be picked up there, short photo stop).
You continue to the provincial town of Medenine, where there is a short coffee break with an explanation of your program. After the coffee break you gradually leave the big cities behind and pass through small villages like Beni Kheddache before the paved road ends.
The trail begins in the middle of the pebbly desert where you will take a photo break. As the day progresses, you will discover just how diverse southern Tunisia is.
From the rocky desert the path leads you to the oasis of Ksar Ghilane. This lies amidst the fine sand dunes where the Eastern Erg begins.
Once there, you will have free time to explore the oasis around the warm spring. Take the unique opportunity to bathe in the spring. Alternatively, you can use the free time for a dromedary ride (optional, payable locally, approx. 50 TND) or a quad tour (optional, payable locally, approx. 100 TND).
The first half of your eventful day is rounded off with a delicious lunch.
After lunch, head towards Matmata. After a short stop in Tamazret, visit a real cave dwelling in the middle of the lunar landscape of Matmata. Try a local rosemary tea and homemade tabouna bread, classically served with olive oil and honey.
The Berber village of Toujane is your final stop of the day. There you will visit the Ksar Metameur, a traditional granary.
The day is coming to an end and you start your way back to Djerba/Zarzis.
