The European Commission Regulation on Civil Aviation Safety applies to all departures from airports within the European Community and, since 1 March 2009, also from Turkey. This regulation limits the amount of liquid that travelers are allowed to carry in their hand luggage through security checkpoints.
There are two restrictions on the amount of liquids in hand luggage:
- Travelers may only carry liquids in containers with a maximum capacity of 100 ml.
- All liquid containers must be presented at security checkpoints in a plastic bag (maximum capacity: 1 liter). This bag must be transparent and sealable. Airports are not required to provide plastic bags for travelers! Examples of liquids include beverages, gels, lotions, creams, toothpaste, and shaving foam.
Exceptions apply in the following cases:
- Baby food, milk or juices for babies and toddlers traveling with you may be carried.
- Personally prescribed medications required during the flight, such as insulin, may be carried. A medical certificate confirming the passenger's need for these medications is required.
Liquids purchased at the airport after the security checkpoints may be carried in hand luggage.
Please note: During stopovers or a change of aircraft (hub flights), you will generally have to go through hand luggage security again, meaning you must comply with the above rules again. This means that you may now carry liquids purchased in duty-free shops (perfume, bottles of drinks, etc.) only in a transparent plastic bag and no more than 100 ml each, otherwise customs will confiscate the purchased liquids.
In addition, travelers are required to remove their coats, jackets, blazers or suits during security checks and to remove large electronic devices, such as notebooks, from their bags.
Everyday objects such as corkscrews, scissors, or other sharp objects that could be used as weapons are not permitted in hand luggage. The same applies to flammable or explosive objects or substances, such as fireworks or aerosols labeled as hazardous materials.
Subject to change and deviations (depending on the airline).
