Corfu, from antiquity to the present
Corfu not only offers beautiful beaches and natural landscapes, the island also has a rich history, which can be clearly seen, especially in Corfu Town.
Stroll on foot with your German-speaking guide along the original harbor of the ancient city of Corcyra to the Old Fortress, or Palaio Frourio as it is known to the locals. Continue to the Royal Palace of Saints Michael and Saint George, with magnificent views of the Liston, the city's famous promenade, and the Esplanade.
Afterwards, you'll visit the Byzantine Museum of Antivouniotissa (admission not included, approx. €5 per person for those over 18). The building is one of the oldest basilicas, dating back to the 15th century, and lovingly restored, and houses numerous icons and religious artifacts.
From here, the tour continues through the winding streets of the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its tall arcaded houses and architecture from various European cultures, it enchants with its Mediterranean charm.
In the heart of the old town lies the Church of Saint Spyridon. He is the patron saint of the island, and his remains are kept in a silver sarcophagus and are venerated and frequently visited by the locals.
Finally, enjoy a coffee at the beautiful town hall square, refresh yourself with a delicious ice cream or buy a souvenir in one of the countless small shops that invite you to go shopping.
