Corfu belongs to the archipelago of the Ionian Islands and is the northernmost and second largest of the seven islands. The Greek name of Corfu is "Kerkira", named after the nymph Kerkira, with whom the sea god Poseidon fell in love, according to legend, before he brought her to Corfu.
A beautiful hinterland and the mountains around the Pantokrator, ancient olive groves, oaks and cypresses, idyllic places, impressive monasteries and castles, interesting museums, dreamy beaches and romantic bays, the turquoise-green sparkling sea and a varied flora and fauna ensure that Corfu is one of the most diverse islands in the entire Mediterranean and is rightly known as the “Green Island”.
