Not just to quench your thirst
kumquat: Liqueur made from the fruit of "Citrus Japonica", the dwarf orange tree introduced by the English from Japan in 1846. Since then, the sweet products of this fruit have been a trademark of Corfu. They are also made into jams and candies. If you eat the fruit fresh, the thin skin is always eaten with it.
Tsitsibira: The alcohol-free ginger beer has been a specialty of the Ionian Islands since the time of the English protectorate. Today it is only brewed in Corfu. The ingredients lemon juice, natural lemon oil, grated ginger, water and sugar are mixed together to create a tasty thirst quencher.
Ouzo: The famous aniseed schnapps is served as an aperitif with a small mixed starter plate (the mezedes). It is preferably drunk with water and ice. You only drink it straight from the Greeks in Germany.
Metaxa: This is a mild brandy.
Coffee: If you order a coffee, you will usually receive an instant coffee. To get a filter coffee, you simply ask for a French coffee, the "kafe galliko". The most popular drink in summer is the frappé, an ice-cold, whipped, instant coffee. Even if you ask for an iced coffee, you will almost always get a frappe. Greek coffee, the "kafe elleniko", is indispensable for Greeks. This little mocha still contains all the coffee grounds. When ordering a coffee, tell the waiter how you would like it to be prepared: without sugar - "sketo", medium - "metrio", sweet - "gliko", with milk - "mä gala".
Water: If you simply order water (“nero”), you will be served still water. The mineral water ("anthrakoucho nero") is not yet everywhere. Usually one then orders soda water ("soda").
