The beautiful island of Mljet got its national park status because of its outstanding cultural and historical heritage ranging from the Illyrian tribes, the Roman Empire and the Republic of Dubrovnik.
Some of the attractions that this island offers are two salt lakes connected to each other and to the sea, Veliko and Malo Jezero (big and small lake). The large lake is also adorned with an islet on the island: the monastery of Land Sv. Maria.
A special feature of the fauna is the mongoose, a badger-sized civet. The mongooses were reintroduced to the island in 1909 to deal with the venomous snake problem there and they have done a great job as there are no more venomous snakes.
The best way to get to the island is by ferry from Dubrovnik or by taxi boat from Korcula, Hvar or Split.
For active vacationers, the park offers recreational opportunities such as swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing and hiking through the dense forests. The Montokuc viewpoint and other peaks offer breathtaking views of the entire national park, as well as the Peljesac Channel and the open sea of the southern Adriatic.
