In the western part of the mountainous region of Gorski Kotar near Rijeka there is a forested massif Risnjak.
It owes its name to its most popular resident, the “Ris” (lynx). The national park extends from 300 to 1.500 m above sea level. From the highest peak, Veliki Risnjak (1.528 m), there is a view of the Kvarner Bay, the Učka Nature Park and, to the north, the Alps, especially when the weather is clear. Brown bears, wolves, lynxes, eagles and other protected animal species live in the wild in this forested mountain range.
The beauty of the forests, the karst phenomena, attractive springs and unique views attract countless mountaineers and other nature lovers to Risnjak.
