Brijuni are an archipelago consisting of two larger and twelve smaller islets off the west coast of Istria, not far from Pula.
The total area is only the surrounding water. Therefore, the total area of the national park is 36 km².
The Brijuni Islands are known for their lush and well-groomed Mediterranean vegetation, designed partly like a landscape park and partly like a safari park. Apart from the dreamy landscape and beautiful coastline, the historic safari park lures visitors to Brijuni National Park, which is still home to elephants, zebras, antelopes, llamas, ostriches, Somali sheep and Indian cows. The characteristic domestic animals of Istria (cattle, sheep, goats and donkeys) are also presented in a separate ethno-park.
The archipelago is also characterized by the valuable cultural heritage from Roman and Byzantine times. Because of their unparalleled beauty, these islands have been a vacation spot for international heads of state and aristocrats for over 100 years.
The shortest connection to the Brijuni National Park is from Fažana, but excursion boats to Brijuni also start from the well-known holiday destinations of Pula, Porec and Rovinj, taking tourists on guided tours.
