Description
This hike takes place in the north of the island. You hike two nature reserves: the natural monument La Corona volcano and the cliffs of Famara in the nature park of the Chinijo archipelago.
The tour begins in the small village of Ye, from where you hike to the La Corona volcano. During the ascent to the crater you can enjoy the wonderful view over the landscape, which is mainly used for viticulture, and over the so-called Malpais - a mighty lava flow full of huge basalt blocks, which pushes down to the azure Atlantic. After viewing the massive crater, circumnavigate its eastern flank. From up here you can see the 7,6 km long lava tunnel of the volcano, 1,6 km of which is now in the sea. The reason for this is: The eruption of the La Corona volcano occurred during the last Ice Age, when the sea level was more than 90 meters below today's level.
The La Corona volcano forms a chain of volcanoes with four other mountains. During your excursion you will climb three of these craters: the volcanoes La Cerca, Los Helechos and La Quemada de Gallo, which probably erupted at the same time as the volcano La Corona. This string of craters is located on the Famara massif and reaches heights of 580 or 560 meters and therefore enables a spectacular panoramic view.
Then you descend and hike a few kilometers on the impressive, 22 km long cliff of Famara. From up here you have a wonderful view of the entire Chinijo archipelago, especially of the nearby island of La Graciosa.
