Import of goods by private individuals
Generally, a duty-free allowance of CHF 150 applies to goods for private use brought personally during travel. If the total value of the goods carried exceeds CHF 150, all goods are subject to duty. Duty-free quantities and limits are only granted once per person per day.
The following allowances apply:
Alcoholic drinks
Persons aged 17 and over may import the following quantities duty-free once per day:
Import 5 l of alcoholic beverages up to 18% vol. and 1 l over 18% vol.
In addition, the following customs duties apply:
Alcoholic beverages up to 18% vol.: 2 SFr/l
Alcoholic beverages over 18% vol.: 15 SFr/l
In addition, VAT of 8% of the value of the goods is due.
Beverages with an alcohol content of up to 0,5% vol. are not considered alcoholic beverages.
Tobacco products
Persons aged 17 and over may import the following quantities duty-free once per day:
250 cigarettes or cigars, 250 ml of nicotine-containing liquids for e-cigarettes, 25 disposable electronic cigarettes or 250 g of other tobacco products.
In addition, the following customs duties apply:
Cigarettes/Cigars: 0,25 SFr/piece
Nicotine-containing liquids for e-cigarettes: 0,25 CHF/ml
Electronic disposable cigarettes: 2,50 SFr/piece
Other tobacco products: 0,1 SFr/g
In addition, VAT of 8% of the value of the goods is due.
hen and jewellery
For personal imports, hair and jewelry worth up to 150 Swiss francs are duty-free if no other goods are carried.
Attention: If you are carrying counterfeits, such as designer brand items or jewelry with fake precious metal stamps, Swiss customs is obligated to confiscate the counterfeit goods. Therefore, only purchase valuables abroad from authorized specialty stores!
