Description
The small, cozy neighboring island
Are you looking for relaxation and tranquility and want to really escape the hustle and bustle? Then go to the neighboring island of Chalki!
You start from the port of Kamiros Skala and drive along the west coast and some offshore islands to Chalki. With a bit of luck you will spot dolphins between the fish farms that accompany the boat for a while. In ancient times, up to 8.000 people lived on the then forested island - today there are only 450. The name Chalki translates as copper, which was previously mined here. Halki, along with the two islands of Symi and Kalymnos, was the center of sponge diving for a long time and it was during this time that it became wealthy. The magnificent houses in the port town of Emborio, which have been and are gradually being renovated, are a reminder of these times. The place invites you to stroll and eat in the small taverns. Here you will discover many picturesque photo opportunities.
The former main town of Chorio below the Venetian castle in the interior of the island has long been abandoned. On the way there you get to Pondamos Beach - a lovely sandy beach in a quiet bay. Spend the day here, relax and enjoy the cool water. Loungers and umbrellas for a fee are available. In the late afternoon the boat starts again towards Rhodes.
