Original village with a lot of charm
Archangelos is located on the east coast and is the largest village on the island with around 7.000 inhabitants. It is on the left side of the east coast road from Rhodes to Lindos.
Above Archangelos are the remains of a Johanniter castle (1467). Not much of the fortress has survived, but the ruins are definitely worth a visit, because from there you have a wonderful view over the entire village and its surroundings.
Although several smaller hotels and guesthouses have been built in recent years, Archangelos has retained its original character. And that includes some small taverns and kafenions. The most beautiful part of the village is at the Archangel Michael Church with its striking bell tower (in the eastern part of the village). In the old town center there are still many beautiful old one-room houses and workshops such as shoemakers, carpet weavers and potters. The goods made there, such as leather high boots, carpets, ceramic plates and vases, are very individual and valuable souvenirs. Below Archangelos (about 2 km away) is Stegna Beach, the local beach of Archangelos. In the past there were only a few fishermen's houses in Stegna. In the meantime, however, there are already several pensions and some hotels.
