The hammam
In the hammam, also known as a Turkish bath, there are different areas, separated by gender (often mixed in hotels): cold bath, warm bath, steam bath and a relaxation room. Access to the hammam always leads around several corners so that it is not visible from the outside.
In mostly tiled interiors, an overseer ensures (moral) order. In the middle of the bathing room, which is surrounded by open cabins, is the so-called Göbektasi (belly stone). The bather stretches out on this pedestal, with a pestamal (bathing apron) around his loins, to sweat and cleanse himself, while the man is lathered by a tellak and the woman by a natir and doused with warm or cold water.
Massages and body scrubs can also be enjoyed (surcharge).
