Quiet and many romantic corners
The ancient city of Olympos was founded during the so-called Hellenistic era and is located about 14 km south of Phaselis between Kemer and Adrasan. You will look in vain for discotheques or other entertainment options here: Olympos is therefore an Eldorado for those looking for relaxation. Tranquility, many romantic corners and the beautiful, long beach make shrill variety superfluous.
Olympos was once one of the six largest cities of the Lycian League, which allowed it to mint its own coins. The earliest coins date from the 2nd century BC. Around 78 BC The place became the base of the pirate Zeniketes from Cilicia. After fierce arguments, Servilius defeated
Isauricus, governor of Lycia, the pirates in the waters of Gelidonya, thereby passing rule of Olympos to the Roman Empire. Because of the port, the city gained economic importance. In 129 AD even Emperor Hadrian paid a visit to the city. For a time it was called half Hadrianapolis. To date, Olympos has lost none of its natural beauty.
Small fishing boats bobble in the crystal-clear water, and amidst fragrant pines, blooming oleanders and lemon and orange trees lie the ruins, thermal baths and remains of the city wall and city gate.
Not far from Olympos, at Cirali, the eternal fire of Chimera burns. After a 20-minute ascent you reach the hill, where many small flames blaze due to escaping gases. According to Homer, the fire-breathing monster Chimera is said to have lived in Lycia. Regardless of which explanation you choose:
It remains a fascinating sight - especially at dusk!
