Description
A cotton castle made of lime
This excursion is one of the highlights of your stay in Turkey. Pamukkale is a unique natural wonder and the jewel among Turkey's attractions that has rightly been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Literally translated, Pamukkale means cotton castle. The name goes back to the special appearance: 3 km long and 100 m high, snow-white limestone deposits pile up in terraces, forming light blue shimmering pools, filled with about 35 °C warm, calcareous medicinal water. The cotton castle grows by a further 7.000 m³ every year.
The Romans already knew about the healing power of the springs bubbling here and built a health resort in the immediate vicinity: Hierapolis. A visit to the well-preserved amphitheater and the necropolis, the largest ancient burial and sanctuary in Turkey, is recommended.
If you wish, you can visit the old Roman thermal baths (optional, for a fee).
Livestock breeding has always been an important source of income in the region. The sheep's wool obtained in this way has been knotted into carpets by the local arts and crafts for many generations. A visit to one of the many weaving workshops in the Taurus Mountains gives you the opportunity to get to know the exquisite products of Turkish folk art and their history. The weavers process the wool with so much effort and care that real little works of art are created.
