Formerly a trading center, now a national park
Sillyon is about 30 km northeast of Antalya and was built on an imposing table mountain. The ancient city was founded in the 4th century BC. Founded by Mopsos - a well-known seer - who settled here after the Trojan War. In the 3rd century B.C. BC Alexander the Great besieged the city, but gave up his plan of conquest again because he shied away from the effort of conquering the city, which was difficult to conquer.
Sillyon, an important trading center in the Hellenic and Roman eras, was quite prosperous at all times. In the Byzantine period it was given the status of a bishop's seat, and under Seljuk rule it was greatly expanded. The most important sights include the theatre, the agora, a gymnasium, the city wall, various towers and temples. The theater's orchestra fell down the mountain in a landslide in 1969. To protect and preserve the ancient city, a national park was established in 1970, covering an area of approximately 67 km².
Please note: Definitely wear sturdy shoes for the ascent and – especially in summer – take enough drinks with you.
