Turkish drinks and Turkish food
Turkish cuisine can look back on a long tradition. The dishes are correspondingly diverse, so that you can get to know numerous dishes and preparation methods during a holiday in Turkey. Contrary to popular belief, dealing with hot and oriental spices or garlic is not wasteful. Since eating pork is forbidden for Muslims, pork dishes are not among the traditional dishes in Turkey.
In general, the local cuisine is well tolerated by Central Europeans, apart from the sometimes generous use of olive oil.
Bread (Ekmek) and water (Su) are part of every meal and are placed on the table without being asked, even in the simplest locality. Breakfast usually consists of white bread, honey (Bal), jam (Reçel), sheep's cheese (Beyaz Peynir), butter (Tereyag), olives (Zeytin) and tea (Çay).
All common drinks are available in Turkey. Tea (Çay) is drunk at any time of the day and is the national drink. Ayran, a refreshing drink made from yoghurt, water and salt, is a popular drink on hot days. The Turkish mocha (Türk kahvesi) is usually drunk after a meal. If aniseed schnapps (raki) is diluted with water, it becomes milky and cloudy; therefore it is also called lion's milk.
