Description
Experience and explore southern Tunisia
Day 1
Visit El Djem, the third largest Roman amphitheater in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was also used as a backdrop for the film "Gladiator". In Matmata you will reach a lunar landscape, which became known as the location of several scenes for the movie "Star Wars". Here people live in archaic cave dwellings, one of which you can visit.
You will also have your lunch here. Your day ends at the gateway to the sandy desert in a mid-range hotel in the oasis of Douz. Enjoy a dromedary ride (optional, payable locally) over the dunes of the Sahara during sunset.
Day 2
After breakfast, you'll cross the Chott El Jerid salt lake – Africa's largest salt desert, through which Karl May once led his legendary adventurers. The sunlight on the salt crystals creates fascinating mirages. The Tozeur oasis is known for its 14th-century mud-brick architecture. You'll travel by off-road vehicle to the picturesque mountain oasis of Chebika: the interplay of the intense colors of the palm trees, mountains, and water creates stunning motifs that you can capture with your camera from a vantage point. On this day, you have the option of visiting the Star Wars film set "Ong Jmal" (optional, payable locally). On the return journey, you'll stop in the holy city of Kairouan, whose old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.
