Discover the Cypriot Peninsula
Nature lovers consider the peninsula northwest of Pafos to be one of the most beautiful regions in Cyprus. Almost 200 bird, 16 butterfly and 500 different plant species, including wild tulips, strawberry trees and orchids, create an unforgettable, idyllic atmosphere in a unique and unspoiled nature reserve.
Numerous nature trails, on which one can explore the peninsula along informative signposts, inspire all hiking enthusiasts. The tourist office made sure that the hikers and walkers on these 2-7 km long, fixed routes do not miss anything of the natural beauty of the island. A special attraction is the Avakas Gorge at the southern end of the peninsula.
Not to be forgotten is the cultural diversity of over 3.000 years of history, peppered with numerous myths and legends. One of the best-known and most famous legends has to do with the legendary goddess of love, Aphrodite, and her lover, Adonis, who met, saw and fell in love in the Akamas forest. This place, the Fontána Amorósa, the fountain of love, can still be visited today.
The peninsula's beaches are also one of the last and most important breeding grounds for the endangered green turtle.
In the past, there were plans to develop this region commercially and privately. Hotel construction projects were being planned, but could be averted thanks to an island-wide survey.
However, the development of the peninsula is still not complete. Should the planning ministry decide to declare Akamas a national park, access to tourists could be completely blocked!
It would have the necessary right to do so, because the majority of the peninsula belongs to the state! A complete development and tourist development should and will not take place under any circumstances. However, this did not help an area on the north coast between Polis and Latschi. Influential landowners and investors built the luxury hotel "Anassa" there.
