A city in the middle of untouched nature!
Polis is north of Pafos. Polis is the shortened name for the correct place name Polis Khrysokhou, which roughly means "City of the Golden Land". There are different explanations for the origin of the attribute “golden”, all of which probably have a true core. One of them is the extraordinary fertility of the country, due to the abundance of water in the Khrysokhou River, which is now fed by the water from some dams.
Polis is now a comparatively cozy vacation spot. Here the holidaymaker will find what he likes about Greece: cozy taverns and bars with candlelight and music by Theodorakis. Tourism has given the place modest prosperity. A relatively large part of the population benefits from the purchasing power of holidaymakers. Because of the wonderful nature, Polis is the ideal place to relax for hikers and nature lovers. The flat landscape, largely shaped by banana plantations, has a pleasantly open character.
From Polis, the road leads towards Akamas via the small fishing port of Latchi with its numerous good fish taverns. On both sides of Latchi you will find beautiful sandy and pebble beaches, which, like many beaches in Cyprus, have been awarded the Blue Flag for particularly good water quality.
Further west you come to the baths of Aphrodite. A cool spring emerges from the rock under a ledge and pours into a natural pool of water. Akamas is said to have surprised naked Aphrodite while she was bathing. The fun-loving goddess then fell in love with the inexperienced voyeur.
In the hinterland, the gentle foothills of the western Troodos chain rise into the sky. Here is the gateway to the Akamas Peninsula, a natural wilderness of incredible beauty with breathtaking gorges, sensational coastlines and easily accessible hiking trails.
