Discover a “different” Cyprus
The south-east of Cyprus appears to you - in complete contrast to the rest of the island - in a completely different guise. Larnaca's palm-lined promenade is littered with sidewalk cafes, taverns, shops, and bars. In the well-equipped marina with its 450 anchorages, boats will find a safe place to spend the winter.
In ancient times Larnaca was known as Kition, the birthplace of the stoic philosopher Zeno. The name Larnaca probably derives from the Greek word "Larnax", which means sarcophagus, as many of these ancient coffins were found in this area.
Larnaca was the second home of Lazarus, who came here after his resurrection and later became the first bishop of Larnaca. In the crypt of the Agios Lazarus Church in the center, which was built in the 10th century, the saint's skull is now kept in a golden shrine.
With 77.000 inhabitants, Larnaca is considerably smaller than Nicosia and Limassol. Maybe that's why the city has such a casual and rustic flair. Enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere of the main shopping area with its colorful and narrow streets full of small shops and a colorful market square. And get to know - near the airport - the oriental touch of the island.
