Gegr\u00fcndet zu Anfang des 15. Jahrhunderts, tr\u00e4gt Betancuria den Namen des Eroberers der Insel, Jean de B\u00e9thencourt. In dem beschaulichen Dorf befindet man sich im geographischen Zentrum von Fuerteventura.<\/p>\n
Die Kirche Santa Maria de Betancuria, wurde 1410 im normannisch-gotischen Stil errichtet. Im Jahr 1424 wurde sie dann zur ersten Kathedrale der Kanaren umgewandelt. Heute sind von der urspr\u00fcnglichen Konstruktion nur noch der erste Teil des Glockenturms sowie die F\u00fc\u00dfe der S\u00e4ulen geblieben. 1620 wurde Santa Maria de Betancuria im Mudejar-Stil neu aufgebaut und erhielt so ihre dreischiffige Form.<\/p>\n
Im Inneren f\u00e4llt der Altaraufsatz aus der zweiten H\u00e4lfte des 17. Jahrhunderts auf, aber auch die reichhaltige T\u00e4felung, die vor allem in der Sakristei bewundert werden kann. Auch das bemalte h\u00f6lzerne Chorgest\u00fchl und die Taufkapelle sind sehenswert. Auff\u00e4llig ist die Anordnung des Bodens, unter dem sich alte Gr\u00e4ber befinden.<\/p>\n
Direkt neben dem Kirchenhof befindet sich ein altes Herrenhaus, das ein Restaurant beherbergt. Sehenswert sind auch die Wallfahrtskapelle San Diego de Alcal\u00e1, die Klosterkirche, in deren N\u00e4he die Ruinen des Franziskanerklosters Convento de Buenaventura zu finden sind sowie das Museum f\u00fcr Religi\u00f6se Kunst (Museo Arto Sacro) und das Historische Museum (Casa Museo de Betancuria).<\/p>\n","protected":false,"gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"html"}]},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
