Korfu ist der westlichste Teil Griechenlands und die n\u00f6rdlichste aller Ionischen Inseln. Die Insel liegt nahe dem albanischen Festland, von dem sie nur durch eine schmale Meerenge getrennt ist (ca. 2 Seemeilen an der schmalsten Stelle). Au\u00dferdem ist Korfu der Punkt Griechenlands, der Italien am n\u00e4chsten liegt. Mit 590 qkm ist sie nach Kefalonia die zweitgr\u00f6\u00dfte Ionische Insel, besitzt aber mit ca. 100.000 Einwohnern die gr\u00f6\u00dfte Bev\u00f6lkerungsdichte.<\/p>\n
Die Insel ist wie eine Sichel geformt und hat eine L\u00e4nge von 62 km. Der breiteste Teil liegt mit ca. 25 km im Norden, wo die Insel sehr gebirgig ist. Der h\u00f6chste Berg ist der Pantokrator mit 906 m. Nach S\u00fcden hin flachen die Berge ab. Der Insel vorgelagert sind einige kleine Inseln und Felsen, um die sich Sagen und Mythen ranken. Am bekanntesten sind wohl die kleine Insel Pontikonissi (M\u00e4use-Insel) und die Klosterinsel Vlacherna. Beliebte
\nAusflugsziele sind die 8 Seemeilen s\u00fcdlich von Korfu gelegenen Inseln Paxos und Antipaxos und die touristisch wenig erschlossenen diapontischen Inseln nordwestlich von Korfu (Othoni, Erikousa und Mathraki).<\/p>\n
Die Insel ist reich an Natur, Kultur und an interessanten historischen Zeugnissen. Wegen ihrer wirtschaftlich und strategisch bedeutsamen Lage war sie bereits in der Antike begehrt und umk\u00e4mpft. Sie wurde von zahlreichen V\u00f6lkern belagert und von Venezianern, Franzosen und Engl\u00e4ndern beherrscht. Korfu war also von jeher, mehr noch als das \u00fcbrige Griechenland, westlichen Einfl\u00fcssen ausgesetzt, die sich mit den hellenischen Traditionen vermischten.
