Das Ballungsgebiet ist die Hauptstadt Mal\u00e9 auf der gleichnamigen Hauptinsel. Hier wird mit Containerschiffen und Flugzeugen fast alles angeliefert, da auf den Inseln nur wenig produziert werden kann.<\/p>\n
Die Malediven z\u00e4hlen zu den wirtschaftlich am wenigsten entwickelten L\u00e4ndern der Welt. Die wichtigste Einnahmequelle ist der Tourismus. In der Landwirtschaft werden auf den Malediven S\u00fc\u00dfkartoffeln, Chili, Hirse und Maniok sowie Fr\u00fcchte wie Papayas, Mangos, Bananen und Brotfr\u00fcchte angebaut. Die wichtigste Nutzpflanze auf den Malediven ist die Kokospalme. Der Fischfang gilt als unverzichtbare St\u00fctze der Inselwirtschaft. Da alle Industrieerzeugnisse und nahezu alle Grundnahrungsmittel importiert werden m\u00fcssen, gibt es ein hohes Handelsbilanzdefizit. Es ist nicht m\u00f6glich, den Import\u00fcberschuss durch Einnahmen aus dem Dienstleistungssektor auszugleichen.
