Die maledivische Landessprache ist das Dhivehi. Es geh\u00f6rt der indo-germanischen Sprachgruppe an. Die Sprache ist mit Ausnahme der vier s\u00fcdlichen Atollen einheitlich. Dort wird Dhivehi gesprochen, das dem Singhalesischen sehr \u00e4hnelt. Im Verlauf der Geschichte wurde Dhivehi stark mit Fremdw\u00f6rtern angereichert, vor allem aus dem Arabischen und Hindi (Indien). Gegenw\u00e4rtig wird f\u00fcr viele unbekannte W\u00f6rter die englische Bedeutung \u00fcbernommen und mit dem landes\u00fcblichen \u201eu\u201c am Schluss versehen.<\/p>\n
Auf Male ist unter der j\u00fcngeren Generation Englisch weit verbreitet. Arabisch ist nur im religi\u00f6sen Bereich von Bedeutung.<\/p>\n
Thaana hei\u00dft die offizielle Schrift. Sie wird, wie das Arabische, von rechts nach links gelesen. F\u00fcr das moderne Thaana werden die arabischen Zahlen 1 bis 9 als Buchstaben genutzt, erg\u00e4nzt durch 9 Schriftzeichen aus dem Dives und Akuru und einigen anderen Symbolen. Thaana geh\u00f6rt den semitischen Schriften an. Die Einf\u00fchrung dieser Sprache war die logische Konsequenz, um arabischen Spracheinfl\u00fcssen gerecht zu werden.<\/p>\n
Heutzutage werden offizielle Aush\u00e4nge, Beschriftungen und z.B. auch Stra\u00dfennamen zweisprachig, das hei\u00dft in Englisch und Thaana, angefertigt. In den Tageszeitungen, die eigentlich in der Landessprache geschrieben sind, ist aber auch eine Seite auf Englisch.<\/p>\n
