Die antike Stadt Dougga (fr\u00fcher Thugga) erinnert stark an Pompeji. Denn sie ist ohne Zweifel die vollst\u00e4ndigste und sehenswerteste r\u00f6mische Ausgrabungsst\u00e4tte Tunesiens. Nicht ohne Grund wurde sie 1997 in die UNESCO-Liste des Weltkulturerbes aufgenommen.<\/p>\n
Dougga ist sehr gut erhalten und hatte zur Zeit ihrer gr\u00f6\u00dften Bl\u00fcte (im 2. und 3. Jh. n. Chr.) nicht mehr als 5.000 Einwohner. Man nimmt an, dass sie einst eine von numidischen Prinzen bewohnte F\u00fcrstenstadt gewesen sei. Die meisten der Prachtbauten stammen aus dem 3. Jahrhundert. Reiche B\u00fcrger unterst\u00fctzten den Bau des Theaters finanziell, dessen R\u00e4nge knapp 3.500 Zuschauer fassten.
