Description
…a culinary journey through the Algarve
The municipality of Silves is the heart of top-quality orange and lemon production. Therefore, there's no better way to start the day than with a visit to a local orange grove. Here, you'll not only learn about the history and the family who owns the grove, but also about the sun-ripened fruit, and you can even pick some yourself. Afterwards, you'll also get to taste them as orange juice and marmalade.
Fortified with plenty of vitamin C, the journey continues to Silves, the former capital of the Algarve. The Algarve is also known and often admired for its abundance of sweets. You'll encounter these during your stay in the form of puddings, tarts, cakes, jams, and countless other delicacies. To give you a taste of the culinary delights in store, you'll begin your visit to Silves with a stop at a typical regional shop. Naturally, you're welcome to sample the specialties. Afterward, you'll have free time to visit the Moorish castle, one of the lasting monuments of the Moorish conquerors, and the Gothic cathedral (entrance fees not included), or to stroll through the narrow streets of the old town. Soak up the history of Silves and its relaxed atmosphere.
The day concludes in the early afternoon with a visit to a local winery whose wines aren't found on every supermarket shelf or wine list. This family-run winery produces small, select batches for the local market. Truly something special!
As well as the delicious tapas that accompany you during the wine tasting, so that you can also get to know the savory delicacies from cheese to olives to ham and much more.
