Description
The diverse nature of the south
After being picked up from your hotel on Djerba, we will travel across the 7 km long Roman causeway “El Kantara” to the Tunisian mainland (participating guests from Zarzis will be picked up there; short photo stop).
They continue driving through the provincial town of Medenine and pass through small villages such as Beni Kheddache before the paved road ends.
The route takes you right through the pebble desert, where you'll stop for a photo break. As the day progresses, you'll discover just how diverse southern Tunisia is.
From the stony desert, the route leads you to the oasis of Ksar Ghilane. This lies amidst fine sand dunes, where the eastern erg begins.
Upon arrival, you will have free time to explore the oasis surrounding the hot spring. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to bathe in the spring. Alternatively, you can use your free time for a camel ride (optional, payable locally, approx. 50 TND) or a quad bike tour (optional, payable locally, approx. 100 TND).
The first half of your eventful day is rounded off with a delicious lunch.
After lunch, you'll travel to Matmata. Visit a genuine cave dwelling amidst the lunar landscape typical of Matmata. Sample local rosemary tea and homemade tabouna bread, traditionally served with olive oil and honey.
Your final stop awaits you at a very special place: Sidi Driss. Known primarily as the filming location for world-famous scenes from Star Wars, you will have the opportunity to explore the site, take photos, and experience the fascinating blend of (film) history and culture firsthand before returning to your hotel.
