Imposing impressions in the middle of a crevice

On this excursion you will discover one of the most impressive and scenic regions of the island: the Samaria Gorge.

With a length of 18 km, the Samaria Gorge is the third largest gorge in Europe. It cuts through rock faces from 200 to 2.000 m in height. The gorge is 300 m wide at its widest point and only 3 m wide at its narrowest point.

In 1962 the Samaria Gorge area was declared a national park. Therefore, the visitor will still find an unadulterated flora and fauna here. For example, you won't see more beautiful cypresses anywhere on Crete. There are also the last free-living wild goats, which the Cretans call Agrimi or Kri-Kri. They have brown fur with black stripes down their backs and faces. Smaller animals can also be found here: migratory birds, owls, falcons, ravens and rabbits.

The Samaria Gorge has been a nature reserve since 1962 and has been uninhabited since 1965. The gorge is therefore only accessible at certain times of the year (usually from May to October, daily between 06 and XNUMX).:00 and 15:00 hours).

During the approx. 4-6 hour hike you cover a distance of 16 km with an altitude difference of around 1.200 m. At the end of the hike you will reach the nice little fishing village of Agia Roumeli. Several taverns take care of your physical well-being (not included) and the pebble beach invites you to take a refreshing dip in the Libyan Sea.

The end of your hike is the boat trip along the cliffs to Chora Sfakion (not included, payable on site). Here the bus awaits you for your journey home.
