The island has a varied and eventful history:
First it was a pirate base, later a Venetian fortress, then a Turkish settlement and finally a leper colony.
Due to the high risk of infection, its inhabitants lived in complete isolation. They formed a village community on the island with a complete infrastructure.
There was a school, grocery stores, and even a tavern.
After the discovery of the vaccine, isolation was lifted and the last inhabitants left the island in 1957.
