Description
Royal summer residence Mon Repos, old town tour and shopping
Following in the footsteps of the original town of Corcyra, visit the extensive Mon Repos Botanical Garden. Here you will find the remains of ancient Paleopolis and the former summer residence of the Greek royal family and the birthplace of the late Prince Philip. The neoclassical villa now houses several exhibitions on the history of the building and the Paleopolis Museum.
The next highlight is not far away and is one of the few Byzantine cross-domed churches that has survived on the Ionian Islands, the Church of Jason and Sossipatros in Garitsa Bay.
Then we head to the island's capital, Kerkyra. The old town is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and with its high arcaded houses and architecture from various European cultures, it enchants with its southern charm. In the middle of it is the church of Saint Spyridon, the patron saint of the island. His body is laid out in a silver sarcophagus and is highly revered and often visited by the locals. The beautiful town hall square, the old fortress, the palace of Saint Michael and Saint George and the famous Liston, the promenade with the many cafes under the arcades, are in the immediate vicinity. You can enjoy watching the hustle and bustle over a coffee, ice cream or Greek meze (starter plate). The countless small shops in the maze of alleyways invite you to go shopping.
At around 13 p.m. you will return to the hotels.
